How Often Do Poodles Bark?

Poodles are one of the cleverest dog breeds. Barking is a crucial part of decision-making for some canines. It has been seen that barking canines are not very comfortable for all situations. More or less, all the dogs bark in general. Barking often depends on an individual and not the whole breed.

Poodles are somewhat vocal canines. Every dog has a unique way to respond to the given situation and the environment near it. As already said, poodles are extremely wise, and therefore, they can be trained easily for anything. How much a dog bark is depended on the mood and temperament of the dog too.

Poodles, as a whole breed, are often noticed to be barking quite a bit. Also, they are a little yappy. However, it is noted that poodles do not bark without a reason or a motive. But the poodles’ barking tendencies are reduced if they are trained well with proper guidance.

In this blog, we are about to discuss the barking tendencies of Poodles, what are the motives for them to bark and how can you train your dog to be less noisy. They are alert and active, intelligent, faithful, and trainable. The origin of poodles is disputed over Germany and France on being a water bird dog or a barbet respectively.

Barking tendencies

The poodles can be trained not to bark very easily. There are three types of poodles: standard, toy, and miniature poodle. They are characterized based on their dimension, where the toy poodle is the tiniest weighing just 5-10 lbs. However, the tendency to bark is generally the same no matter what the size is. If you are thinking that the barking tendency of smaller poodles would be less than usual, then you are wrong. Each poodle is equal in this matter.

Why do they bark?

As stated earlier, there is always a motive for the poodles to bark. Poodles do not bark without a reason. Those reasons might include the following:

  • Loud noises (e.g. Thunderstorm)
  • Being left alone
  • People trespassing
  • For defense
  • New people coming in
  • Excitement
  • Boredom
  • Weather issues

Poodles suffer from separation anxiety. Being left alone is something they can not tolerate at all. They require a lot of activity and attention. If they are bored, they would bark for the sake of it. They are extremely attached to their family and therefore they try their best to protect them from unknown dangers.

What are the other noises that a poodle can make?

As mentioned earlier, poodles are a very vocal breed. They make a variety of different noises for expressing themselves. Whimpering, howling, yelping, whining, purring, or growling is the different kinds of sounds they make according to how they want to express themselves. From soft noises to loud barking, poodles are capable of making any kind of noise. Sometimes, it becomes their habit to growl excessively. Therefore, we should know how to train them at a young age.

What to do about their barking? How to train?

There are different ways to keep them from barking. When you leave them alone, you can put on calming music to not make them feel lonely in the house or place them by a window. You should give them loud noise exposure since the start to avoid them being terrified of the natural noises like a thunderstorm. Make the poodle socialized to immune them to people. You should also give your dog toys to play with to keep them away from boredom.

Training your poodle to keep him/her from barking requires constant efforts. They are very curious animals. They should understand what we expect from them. One of the most common techniques to make them stop barking is to coach them the “speak” command. This way they will know when to bark.

Giving them treats and praising them when they stop barking or stay quit is a good technique to train them. You should ignore them while they are barking and give a treat when they are quite. This is a loved method because it involves all the praise and love, attention, and pats. And which dog does not like that?

Continual barking

If even after training your poodle, there is continuous barking or making other kinds of noises, there might be symptoms of some issue going on with them. Do not ignore the issue of barking as a whole. Take care that you are not missing out on any diseases or emotional issues going on with your dog.

It is your sole responsibility to take care of your dog, take them to a veterinary doctor at every appointment on time, and do not leave your dog alone for more than 4 hours at home. It is very important to pay attention to the minutest details for a healthy growing, active, and loving dog that you have.

Wrap up

Remember, if they are not used to different people coming to your house and they have not perfectly socialized, they will bark and create a very uncomfortable atmosphere. Therefore, they should be socialized enough for a more friendly environment in the house. Do not appear to be harsh with them, they are a very sensitive breed.

Poodles are an excitable breed. They can get to barking from pleasure too. Toys, mental health activities, physical training, playing fetch, treats as a compliment, and other activities like swimming, walking, running, playing, etc. are extremely important for the overall development of a dog.

The solutions to the barking problems are very easy and straightforward. Every dog requires proper attention and love from your side. You should start training your dog at a very young age for them to be better learners. In the end, one should understand that it is their nature to bark.

It can be reduced and restricted to a certain limit but at the same time, you should give your dog a chance to express themselves and love you. Barking is the only medium through which they can express their feelings and emotions towards you.
