Parrots are famous among birds as pets. But their instinct still connects them with the wild environment. A parrot that has never been out of its cage may not survive for a long time if let loose.

Thus, securing the compound and keeping a close watch is of vital importance. Without supervision or maintenance, there are chances that it will fly away. 

 Do parrots ever come back if they fly away?

Parrots living with pet parents for a long time do not know the pain of searching for food. After escaping, the first thing they will search for is food. It may not be readily available. Parrots will return to their cage in the lure of food and water.  

Companionship:

Parrots require human care and attention. They are not low maintenance. Being attention seekers, they always need petting. They are very social and like being around known people.

They are not very fond of strangers. On escaping, they feel vulnerable to unknown people and predators. The want for companionship and security makes them desire to return.

Vehicles:

Parrots living with humans from a tender age are not aware of vehicles on the road. On sudden escape, the commotion of vehicles and noise scares them. They have an immediate urge to return. 

Along with the above reasons, it is also necessary to act on a personal front. Waiting without any action will reduce the chances of locating your parrot. Undivided attention in a search operation will help in faster retrieval.

Retrieving a lost parrot

From the above details, it is understood that your parrot might want to return after escaping. However, it may not be able to locate its owner’s place.

Injury can be another reason which restricts its movement. The approach of evening time and lack of light can be other reasons. Thus, some immediate reaction process will help in locating your parrot sooner.

Every pet parrot has a name. This name is familiar to your parrot and will initiate a response. After realizing that your parrot is missing, keep calling its name.

If it is still wandering around in the neighborhood, there will be a response. But this will work if there is instant action. Once the parrot flies away higher or amidst noisy areas, there are minimal chances of locating it.

Do not scare away:

While searching for the parrot, carry along its portable cage. On locating it, ensure that the cage is within its visibility and the doors are open. When it finds its familiar cage with some eatables in it, there is a maximum possibility of entering it. A sudden call or strange noise will scare it further. As a reflex action, it will fly away again. 

Use binoculars:

Parrots often perch on trees and revive their energy after a long flight. Using binoculars will help in searching for them.

Once you locate, do not try to prick with pointed objects. Startling them will make all the hard work go in vain. Dangerous objects might also injure them.

Having patience at this moment is vital. The parrot will gradually come to you. However, keep a constant track of its movement if it flies away again.

Keep strangers away:

While searching, ensure that there are no individuals who are not familiar. Since parrots are not fond of strangers, they will try flying away from unknown faces.

Pet owners and children who are in constant touch will comfort them. A sense of security will help them move closer.

Among other necessities, food and water will be parrots first search. Ensure that you keep a sufficient amount in some favorite spots around the house, which may lure them to return. Hunger will help in retrieving your parrot.

As a precautionary measure, many pet parents clip their wings. Using nets in doors and windows will prevent them from leaving. Training them from a young age will minimize the chance of losing their way.

Appropriate behavior, maintenance, and care will avoid situations. Supervision is crucial when you have a pet parrot at home. Instead of panicking, having patience, and acting cautious will maximize the chances of tracking the parrot.
