Best Age To Neuter A Beagle

When you finally get your favorite Beagle home, you get everything ready to have a fun-filled life ahead with you. Apart from vet visits, dog food, and exercise, another important decision is about spaying or neutering your beagle. Whether you should do it or not is your decision. If you decide to do it, then choosing an appropriate age is important in this matter. Considering the number of abandoned pets each year, it is advisable to spay your pet at the right age.

What is the best time to neuter or spay a beagle?

There are a range of benefits of early spaying and neutering. If your dog is touch with an intact dog, try to consider spaying as soon as possible to avoid the possibility of an unplanned litter.

For a female beagle, the best time to spay will be before her first heat, which is around the 5th month. A proper consultation with the veterinarian will assure you if the beagle is ready to undergo the procedure. At the most, if a delay is required, spaying for female beagles will be done before the 1-year mark. It is suggested that male beagles must be neutered before bad habits develop in them. The male beagles have to be nurtured between the 6 to the 12-month mark.

Benefits of early spaying or neutering

Beagles are small dogs; hence, early spaying or neutering has several long-term benefits

A popular belief is that spaying is done only to prevent mating. Though that is one of the reasons, there are many other healthier outcomes of the process.

Reduction in the number of abandoned pets

Spayed female and neutered male beagles will avert the chances of unplanned breeding. This way, you can prevent many puppies from going to shelter homes.

Lesser Infection. Increased Lifespan

Spaying or neutering procedures greatly reduce the chances of deadly infections in beagles.

Minimizes Negative Traits

Both male and female beagles show some aggressive characteristics at puberty. Spaying and neutering can help in getting control over marking, increased territorial barking, and intentions to run off.

What happens to the beagle during the spaying or neutering process?

For a female beagle, spaying involves surgical removal of the uterus and the ovaries to prevent unwanted pregnancies. After giving general anesthesia, a small incision is made in the abdomen of the dog to remove the uterus. Blood vessels and ovarian ligaments are tied together. After this, the abdominal tissues are put back together. The female dog might try to lick her stitches which must be prevented to avoid infections. Vets recommend putting a cone or collar around the beagle’s neck.

Recovery time: It is advisable to allow the female beagle to rest for about ten days. Observe the pet for any signs of vomiting, tremors, pale gum, bleeding, or any other complications. Bring it to the veterinarian’s notice right away. The dog will be called up after two weeks for a check-up, and removal of the stitches.

Male Beagles are neutered by taking out the testicles through a small incision in front of the scrotum. The blood vessels are cut off after being tied up. The incision will be dissolvable or can be removed after a period of 10 days.

Recovery Time: Male beagles are generally ready to run around and play, just days after the surgery. For better healing of the incision, it is best to reduce playtime and exercise for about two weeks. Male beagles will not need pain medications after the surgery, though there will be swelling for 3-4 days.

Will the process cause any negative effects on the beagle?

Some dog parents think that fixed dogs will be frustrated when not able to mate. They think that neutering will make the dogs depressed and adversely affect their activity level.

However, this is a false impression. According to clinical studies, male dogs do not exhibit any mating behavior unless provoked by their own hormones in reaction to a female dog in heat. Once neutering is performed, the urge to mate will be gone, so a male dog will not be bothered about it. A fixed male beagle will show better focus and stamina to exercise. It will show all of the qualities a good watchdog is expected to have.

Do fixed dogs gain weight?

Dogs gaining weight have little to do with the spaying or neutering process. As they mature, dogs can possibly gain calories.

Should Senior Dogs be neutered?

Spaying or Neutering has known to extend the lifespan of a dog significantly.

Unlike humans, female dogs may have heat cycles throughout their life. So, it is better to prevent them from becoming pregnant in their senior years. Spaying reduces the chances of developing ovarian cancer and other uterine infections, which are common in older dogs.

Hormonal changes in a female dog often affect other health conditions like diabetes and epilepsy. Spaying decreases the hormonal changes in the female dog’s body. Thus, improving the quality of life for the dog.

Neutering a senior male dog, reduces the risk of developing testicular cancer and canine prostate disease. As the dog ages, the chances of health problems increases, fixing them brings down the dangers of developing life-threatening diseases.

Post-Surgery Care

After the spaying or neutering procedure, the dog might behave little wobbly. Some might be ready to head home the same day. Others might have to be observed throughout the night. Most male dogs are up and kicking within hours of the surgery. Once you are back home after the surgery, limit exerting activities for your pet. Observe the operated area for any swelling, soreness, or torn stitches. The stitches will have to be removed at the clinic within a week of the procedure.

Conclusion

Beagles are naturally excited and hyperactive dogs. The one that blends with all the family members easily. If you wish to provide your beagle a healthier and longer life, think seriously about the perfect time to spay or neuter the dog. The benefits outdo the little risks of fixing a dog. Overall, the health benefits of early spaying or neutering are many. However, make sure your pup is healthy enough to recover fast from the process.
