Tomatine is a natural ingredient found in normal tomatoes so if your dogs are eating the plant itself then they will be exposed to tomatine.

it can be poison to beagles so if you are not sure whether a dog has eaten any part of the plant then have them checked out by your veterinarian!

Unripe tomatoes also contain tomatine which can be toxic to dogs so you should not give them these.

Signs of Tomato Poisoning

Poisoning only occurs when dogs eat a large amount of the plant and unripe tomatoes. It includes:

Lethargy – one of the most common signs.

Uncontrollable heartbeat –  signifies that the dog is having a hard time due to exposure to the toxic effects of tomatine.

Vomiting –  indicates that your dog ate a large number of tomatoes or tomatine and should be taken to a vet as soon as possible so he can provide him with fluids and check his blood pressure.

Weakness – This can indicate that the dog has been exposed to tomatine and could be experiencing seizures.

Tremors – It indicates that the dog has eaten ripe tomatoes and is experiencing a toxic shock.

Coma – This is a sign of advanced poisoning and can be fatal if not treated immediately.

Drooling –  can be a sign of nausea and is a common problem in dogs that have eaten something they are not used to.

Uncoordination –  is another symptom of advanced poisoning.

If your dog is showing any of the symptoms mentioned above, then let a vet take care of him!

Can Dogs Eat Cooked Tomatoes?

Dogs can eat cooked tomatoes but make sure you keep an eye on them when they eat the food because some dogs may have allergies to certain foods.

Offer your pup small portions of cooked tomatoes and see how he reacts after eating. If he is fine, then let him enjoy the food! But if any of the symptoms explained above happen, then bring him to a vet immediately.

Note – don’t add garlic, or onion to the cooking process because they are toxic to dogs.
